The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
